BrahMos, the acronym is perceived from the fury of two rivers, the Brahmaputra and the Moskva, representing the two nations, India and Russia. BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from ships, submarines, aircraft, or land.
BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd is a JV between India's Defence Research and Development Organization (DR-DO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyenia, having its HQs in New Delhi. The company was established with an authorized capital of $250 million with 50.5% from Indian side and 49.5% from Russian side. The company is responsible for designing, developing, producing and marketing the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile with active participation of a consortium of Indian and Russian industries.
It travels at speeds of Mach 2.5 to 2.8, and is the world's fastest cruise missile, around 3.5 times the speed of USA's subsonic Harpoon cruise missile. A hypersonic version is also under development (Lab Tested speed Mach 5.26).
The ship-launched and land-based missiles can carry a 200 kg warhead, whereas the air-launched variant can carry up to 300 kg in warhead. It's maximum range is 290 kms.
The high-speed of BrahMos gives it better target-penetration characteristics than lighter sub-sonic cruise missiles than the Tomahawk.
The Joint Venture company has become a role model by integrating public-private industries from India and Russia as a consortium of "Missile Industry Complex". The success of BrahMos has emerged due to the shared vision of the leaders of the two countries to create common culture and strategic relationship.
